PDW-U1 is a XDCAM Computer Disk Drive Reader/Recorder. It is
essentially a computer disc-drive for SonyÆs
XDCAM optical video discs which allows both PC and Mac users with
a USB enabled computer to view, convert and edit previously shot
video and then recording your edited media back to disc. The
drive supports both HD and SD video formatted discs, as well as
single layer (PDF23A) and dual-layer (PDF50DLA) discs. The latest
versions of Viewer, Transfer and Utility software programs and
drivers are available in both Mac & PC formats on SonyÆs support site, and once installed the
drive will be natively recognized by many professional editing
programs like Apple Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, and Sony
Vegas. If you edit in the native XD Codec, you can than export
your edited segment back to a formatted disc for playback or
archive. This particular drive (SN #010034) was purchased new in
2008 and was sparingly used on two small projects, so it has very
low hours on it (235 Operation, 9 Seek, 9 Spindle hours). Comes
with original box, power supply, USB cable, manual, and a couple
of recycle-able single layer discs. Note: These drives donÆt format or erase discs, you need a
camcorder or a player/recorder to do this, typically users of
this drive are working with pre-shot media, so this usually isnÆt an issue. Also, this drive does not ôplayö video to an external monitor, it
requires a computer to view or manipulate the media. Overall,
this is a well-designed and affordable video device for producers
and editors working within the Sony XD product family
